Lizzie Borden and her sister Emma live a life of privilege and entitlement, with wealth and social status far beyond their neighbors. But most pleasures are just window dressing, dangling beyond their reach. Riches are kept quarantined by a frugal patriarch, unable or unwilling to change his scrimping ways. As they become older, Lizzie and her sister grow restless, aching for a more opulent life—to reside on The Hill, in a big house, amongst their peers and Fall River’s finest families. Now their father plans to give all his wealth away—to his wife, no doubt. And, why not? Abby Durfee Borden had been a devoted mother to his two ungrateful daughters. Andrew Jackson Borden has no intention of moving to The Hill or abandoning the home he purchased for his wife. Discord and turmoil soon began to ferment and fester. Lizzie expresses concern that “Father has enemies and I fear that they will burn the house down around us.” On a sultry August morning, in the naked light of day, someone enters 92 Second Street and brutally hacks and murders Andrew and Abby Borden. Soon the finger of guilt points to Lizzie. But she loves her father. He means everything to her. The gold ring she had lovingly given him and that he always wore said as much. She would never harm him. Or would she? The Girl with the Pansy Pin tells the gripping story of a desirable and vivacious young Victorian woman desperately longing for adventure and a lavish life. Instead, she wastes away in a stale, modest existence, in a father’s foregone reality, one with little chance of ever discovering love, happiness, or fulfillment. And now they have charged poor Lizzie with double murder.

Lizzie Borden, The Girl with the Pansy Pin (9780981904344) Michael Thomas Brimbau Books Reviews

You can tell the writer is a Fall River native who knows a great deal about the town and its history, which he weaves into the Lizzie Borden story. The narrative begins some time before the murders, and the main characters are drawn in great descriptive detail. The book has great descriptive power in general and demonstrates a determination to make environment and atmosphere as real as possible. Those who have studied the Borden case should appreciate the fact that the author respects the facts of the actual case--even as a new, mystery character is introduced. Most satisfying of all is an utterly unique solution to the murders.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was one of those stories that even though you know it's fiction you can imagine Lizzie in some of these situations. The way things are described it's like your looking at the situation first hand. Toward the end of the book I couldn't put it down and when I did finish it I had to go back & read the ending again. I was totally surprised!
This book was very disappointing to me. The murders Don't occur til you've read 60 per cent . The first part of the book goes on and on about life in the Borden's house and how many enemies Mr. Borden had. It was repetitive and boring. The only reason I continued reading was I thought when it came time for the trial the author would have written a court scene with witnesses but he skimmed right over that. He instead wrote about what newspapers were writing about Lizzie. The end of the book told how Lizzie finally got to live the life she wanted. I would not recommend this book .It was too long and not very interesting
I truly enjoyed this novel, great vacation reading.
The author truly knows Lizzie Borden and Fall River. The story is graphic, rich and rewarding.
Very entainering story line. Believable characters, and well thought out plot. I thourghly enjoyed it.
I find it hard to know how to review the book. The characters were well-developed, and the story was reasonably entertaining. But it was really poorly edited, which really detracted from the overall flow.
As a long-time student of the infamous Lizzie Borden case, there was no way I was going to miss reading this book. Brimbau wisely delays our first meeting with Miss Lizzie while giving us a thoroughly believable and vivid portrait of Fall River, just past the Christmas of 1891. The author's massive knowledge of the town allows him to give us the history of Fall River, which is essential to the story. This is an epic and sometimes romantic retelling of the events, including a look back at Lizzie's Grand Tour of Europe, where she meets up with some major (and well-chosen) figures of the day, a very ballsy move on Brimbau's part (though one that I do think goes on just a bit too long, which is why I didn't give the book five stars). I have to say the wrap-up of the book is breathlessly exciting and kept me guessing until the last page. LIZZIE BORDEN THE GIRL WITH THE PANSY PIN is an exhilarating, clever, and, above all, atmospheric piece of work, and I recommend it.
